WITCH NAMES

Finally, someone requested some information. I really enjoy this type of situation. Someone asked for some information on witch names, and how to choose your own. This will probably lead me to at least a three part session. This will be posted first, then numerology, and eventually astrology, and maybe even mythology.
First off I am of the opinion that the majority of witches/ wiccans/ and pagans out there are geeks. I don't mean this in a mean derogatory manner. This just:
1. Catches your eye
2. Makes you think for yourself
3. Makes you examine yourself
4. Is TRUE
What I mean by this is that the majority of the pagans that I've encountered are all intelligent, and very well read. They know the difference between fact and fantasy, and they can debate will logical and documented ideas and theories. Sorry if I'm giving you too much credit (JUST KIDDING).
So when you are looking for a witch name for yourself, use what you know best. The majority of the ones that I've heard are names of Gods or Goddesses, heroes, or characters out of science fiction or fantasy. For example, I've heard quite a few Galadrials, Rhiannons, and Morgans, etc.
So obviously you can choose a name that already exists, but choose one that has a personal connection. Such as a favorite, or one that you are most like, or something that you strive to be.
Another way is to use numerology. Choose a number that best represents you, either a favorite number, or one that has a personal or astrological significance. Then piece together a name using letters. Try different combinations until you get one that sounds good, feels comfortable, and matches the number that you choose.
Yet another way is to use runes. Create a runescript to best describe yourself, or is a personal "charger" so to speak. Then transpose the letters into standard English, and see what you get. Then play with the order of the letters or runes to get one that sounds "right" to you.
All in all, it's like being the Goddess or the God. They are one yet go by many names. Some witches do that. It's much like choosing a cyber-name. Some people use a different name based on if they are working with a coven or solo, if they are doing spellwork, or divination. It's a private name, a secret one, and the more you share it the more the uniqueness between you and the gods is dissipated. Yet, it allows you to be known as much as you like and to whom you like. Contrary to popular belief, not all of us are out the the closet yet. Sometimes our names are the only thing we have, to be socially accepted within certain circles, and not allowing the circles to overlap. I mean really you meet someone at a circle, you know that person lives in such-and-such city, but you really can't look up Raven Gandalf in the phone book. It allows us to be who we are and who we want to be to our friends relatives and acquaintances.
So in summary you can choose one, or make one up. In the end it comes down to personal preference. You can just as easily use one of these methods or trash them all and do what you feel is right for you.
So I hope that this was helpful to at least one person out there. Keep in mind that in a religion the goal really isn't the important part, it's the journey that gets you there, THAT is the important thing.
