Free WILL vs. FATE
This is always a curious argument, even in Christian realms. Why do tarot cards, runes, I Ching, and other forms of divination work? Do they tap into the universal mind consciousness, and tell us what is predestined? Do they just tell us the destination our current path leads to?
I like to think of it as a combination of both. I like to think that whatever force is guiding our lives, know exactly what we are doing and where we are going, and that it is under It's guidance and direction that we are walking down the path that we were meant to.
Try to envision, a olden- day child birth. A new child is born, and then in walks a mysterious stranger. He talks to the mid- wife, and the mother. He tells them that this is the book of this child's life. The mother and mid- wife scoff at the idea, but they dare not destroy the book. Instead they hide it. The child grows and lives a truly eventful life. Full of moral dilemmas, choices and opportunities to express his free- will.
On the day that his parents die, the old mid- wife comes to the child, who is now a man. And tells him of the mysterious stranger, and the book of his life. He too scoffs at the idea, but also dares not destroy it. He lives a very fruitful life and has children of his own. Still making his own decisions and using his free will to mark his life.
When finally he is on his own deathbed, he turns to his oldest son, and tells him of the book. He asks his son to read the book to him. His whole life is in that book, every major decision he made, every choice made of his own free will, even down to the mid- wife, the book, and his son reading the book. When his son finishes reading the book, his father dies, for it ended with his death.
Now here is the interesting question. Did the man actually use free will, or was it all predestined within that book. The answer is both. We are made a certain way. Yes we can change, but based on our life path, those are changes we are destined to make. We make our own choices but because we are who we are, we make the decisions that are right for us, what we believe in, whether it is for the greater good, or personal gain. We are who we are. The decisions we make are ours, but we make them based upon who we are.
In the end the path you choose is yours, but you may have walked it before. Free will is our gift, the free will to be who we are. Our destiny lies within our own souls, and you will find it through trials and tribulations. But when all is said and done, we are but who we are.
